Meet Leanne Fan: The Teen Genius Making Ear Infections a Thing of the Past!
Hey STEAM enthusiasts!
Today, we’re shining a spotlight on a young innovator who’s not just dreaming big but making a massive impact in the world of healthcare. Meet Leanne Fan, a 14-year-old whiz kid from San Francisco, California, whose inventive spirit and compassion are changing lives—one ear infection at a time!
The Buzz about Ear Infections
Let’s face it—ear infections are a pain, literally. They’re especially common among infants and toddlers, leading to many sleepless nights for both kids and parents. But did you know that if left untreated, these pesky infections can lead to permanent hearing loss? Yikes!

This is even more of a problem in low-and-middle-income countries where access to medical care is as scarce as a unicorn sighting. Enter Leanne Fan, a bright young mind who believes that healthcare should be a universal right. And boy, did she take that belief to heart!
A Light Bulb Moment—Literally!
Leanne’s journey to ear infection stardom began with some inspiration from the past. She started studying Niels Finsen, a Nobel Prize winner from 1903. Finsen used light therapy to treat diseases like lupus vulgaris, which sounds fancy but basically means a type of tuberculosis.

Fan thought, “Hey, if light therapy can work for TB, why not for ear infections?” And thus, the idea for her revolutionary Finsen Headphones was born. Yes, you heard that right—headphones that don’t just play music but also treat ear infections. Talk about multitasking!
The Finsen Headphones: Your Kid’s New Best Friend
Here’s where it gets cool. The Finsen Headphones use blue light therapy to detect and treat ear infections. This isn’t just a clever gadget—it’s a game-changer. Fan’s invention has the potential to reduce hearing loss due to ear infections by a whopping 60%! And if you’re thinking, “How do you get a kid to wear these headphones?” don’t worry. Leanne thought of that too.
She designed the headphones so kids can jam to their favorite tunes while getting treatment. Now that’s what we call a win-win! Imagine your little one rocking out to their favorite songs and beating ear infections at the same time. Parenting just got a lot easier.
America’s Top Young Scientist
Leanne’s ingenuity didn’t go unnoticed. In October 2022, she was crowned America’s Top Young Scientist at the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Along with the bragging rights, she snagged a $25,000 cash prize and a special destination trip. Not too shabby for a 14-year-old, right?
Why We're Proud of Leanne
Leanne’s story is a testament to the power of creativity and compassion. She saw a problem, thought outside the box, and used her skills to create a solution that could help millions of children around the world. It’s young minds like hers that inspire us all to think bigger and bolder.
So, here’s to Leanne Fan—a young inventor who’s not just hearing the future but creating it. Keep dreaming big, Leanne. We’re all ears!
